Tennessee vs Purdue TransPerfect Music City Bowl Preview

Big defense fans don’t need to tune in.

Purdue star WR David Bell has stepped down, but the passing game that totaled 340 yards per game is still set to play on a Tennessee high school that was 103rd nationally. The Boilermakers will throw the ball every once in a while just because it’s supposed to, but they’ll be bombs from the start.

Tennessee loves to run the ball, but second running back Tiyon Evans surprisingly left, choosing to take his talents to Louisville. The powerful offense should continue to roll with one of the most efficient attacks in the country, racking up 459 total yards per game with a quick style that doesn’t slow down.

The Flight defense that has had so many problems throughout the season moved in late when the schedule got easier, but now he needs to increase the passing speed to force the Purdue offense to rush a bit and break out of his dink-and-dunk style. Without Bell, down games will be more difficult to obtain.

Purdue’s defense has been strong throughout the year – holding out against everyone except Purdue and Wisconsin – but that’s without the opt-out pass rusher George Karlaftis, the job of keeping the flights up to speed and flash.

Why Purdue will win the TransPerfect Music City Bowl

Purdue can follow.

Not having the lead man David Bell around is a problem, but there are other weapons to play with – there’s been a lot of time figuring out how to make up for the loss of their lead man.

No, Purdue may not have Tennessee’s great playing ability, but short to mid-range shots will be important as well. The offense will control the clock while working on Vol D which gives a lot of passing yards.

Tennessee being dead last at the time of possession will be important here.

The Flights will fly away and be explosive, but the racing game is a big deal. Against FBS teams, the team is 6-0 averaging five or more yards per carry and 0-5 when it hasn’t.

Purdue has allowed 4.2 yards per carry this season and allowed just over five yards per shot against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Why Tennessee will win the TransPerfect Music City Bowl

All things considered, Tennessee is entering this relatively clean situation on all fronts – I’m knocking on the wood.

It’ll be as close to a regular-season squad as most SEC teams outside of college football playoffs, and everything should show up with offense early on.

It starts with QB Hendon Hooker, who took off once he got back on offense, and now he should be back for next year after playing in this field.

Purdue’s defense has been strong throughout the season, but it was hit hard by teams that could pitch – and there weren’t many.

Ohio State had 361 yards, and Notre Dame and Michigan State were both effective in the air – that’s about it for dangerous passing attacks on the slate. There were a few infractions that went at a good pace, but no one got anything like Tennessee brings.

Flights will operate with speed, balance and keep the attack moving with points coming in clusters. They can and will hit a few deep shots, while Purdue will mostly throw midrange shots.

Not having Bell around hurts, and now losing second receiver Milton Wright – he’s retiring – makes things even more difficult.

Tennessee vs Purdue: TransPerfect Music City Bowl, what’s going to happen

Tennessee have already claimed victory without losing head coach Josh Heupel to the Oklahoma post, but it’s going to be a long day to deal with in Purdue’s style.

The tempo is going to matter here.

Tennessee was a lot of fun, but there was a good win over Kentucky, and that’s about it. The second best victory against Missouri or South Carolina.

Purdue are a passing team, and they’re about to face a team that can’t really stop attacks that can throw. This is going to make for a fun game, especially because it will open up the Tennessee offense even more.

The last time we saw a Jeff Brohm team in a bowl game, his Boilermakers were rocked by Auburn 63-14 in the 2018 Music City Bowl. It won’t be that, but the Flights will have just a little over. pop in the fourth quarter – and more good pieces in place – to come out with a crazy win.
