NIA files indictment against 3 defendants in Khejuri bomb blast case


The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed an indictment against three defendants involved in the Khejuri bomb blast case in West Bengal. The case concerns the making of bombs in a house of one of the defendants – Kankan Karan, in Khejuri, Purba Medinipur district, to terrorize the general public. The scheme broke on January 5 and the bombs exploded in the house where they were made.

During the explosion, the defendants Kankan Karan and Anup Das were seriously injured, and the latter subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The case was originally filed on January 5 and was later re-filed on January 25 by the NIA.

Invoice details

The indictment was filed against Samar Shankar Mandal under Sections 120B, 109 and 201 of the IPC and 4 and 6 of the Explosive Substances Act. Other defendants listed in similar sections include Ratan Pramanik, Kankan Karan, Anup Das who died in the blast and charges were therefore dropped against him.

Two people, including a congressman from Trinamool, were killed in the blast in Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal, in January this year. The ruling TMC alleged that BJP workers were behind the explosion, a claim the saffron party denied. Following the incident, clashes were reported between TMC and BJP supporters in Khejuri.

CID recovers 15 crude bombs in North 24 Parganas district

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) bomb squad recovered 15 crude bombs from Jagaddal area in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Friday. The CID then disposed of the bombs in a closed paper mill.

In the early hours of July 17, in a separate but similar incident to Khejuri, people making bombs in a field in Malda district were killed when the bombs exploded while they were being made. Police said the deceased, identified as Safikul Islam (30) and Farjan SK (45), were making bombs in an agricultural field in Jesarathtala Balutola when the blast occurred.

“Residents heard a massive explosion around 2.30am. By the time our staff reached the area, it was found that three injured people had been taken to hospital. Doctors at the hospital said two of between them, while the other person is undergoing treatment at Malda Medical College and Hospital,” a police officer said.
