Continuing a theft case, city police arrested S. Rafiq aka Noorudhin aka Ismail, 37, one of the defendants in the 2014 Chennai Central Station bombing case.
On May 5, P. Suraj, a jeweler, was pulled over by a bicycle gang on Allikulam Link Road in Pattalam. The thugs stole 7.5 lakh in cash and 282 grams of gold jewelry and ingots from him and fled. Police arrested an individual, Sabiyullasin for the theft and questioned him in custody. Based on his information, police learned of Rafiq’s involvement in the theft. He was protected from a hiding place in Tiruvottiyur. Gold jewelry, a car and a bicycle were seized from him. Police took him into custody on Friday for further investigation.
Police said Rafiq had more than 10 criminal fraud cases and a warrant without bail, issued against him, was pending in connection with the bomb explosion case.
It will be recalled that two low-intensity bombs exploded in the early hours of May 1, 2014, on a train bound for Guwahati from Bangalore arriving at Chennai Central Station, killing a female passenger and injuring at least 14 others and l he case is being investigated by the CB-CID.
