Police have arrested four people in connection with crude bomb explosions in Malda Manikchak that killed three people and injured at least four others. While two people died on the night of Saturday’s incident, one of the two injured died last night, we learn.
Three of the four were arrested in areas below English Bazaar police station, while one was arrested in Manikchak, police said today. All were from Gopalpur area in Manikchak where the incident took place.
“A complaint has been filed against them on several counts, including murder and possession of explosives,” said a police source.
According to police sources, those arrested are Toukhir Alam, Asraul Haque, Mofizul Sheikh and Kalu Sheikh. A Soleman Ali, 25, died on Sunday evening at a private hospital in the Gabgachi area of the English bazaar, where he was undergoing treatment.
“Three people had been admitted to a private hospital to avoid the police.
Earlier, two people had died at the scene in the bomb blast and they were identified as Farzan Ali, 45, and Shafiqul Islam, 30. Currently, 20-year-old Salim Sheikh and 23-year-old Khabiruddin Sheikh are being treated at the private hospital in critical condition,” a source said. Meanwhile, Hajibul Sheikh, 25, another person injured in the blast is being treated at Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Police said multiple explosions rocked the jute field at Gopalpur as some people made bombs.
“Police took a sniffer dog to the site of the explosion on Monday and conducted a thorough investigation,” a source said.
“We presented the arrest to Malda District Court today. Additionally, the district police have opened an investigation into the whole incident,” a police officer said.
