Police evacuated residents of Bessbrook, County Armagh, following reports of a loud explosion at a housing estate late Thursday evening. (January 27)
The PSNI cordoned off the area of John F Kennedy Park after the location of debris from a suspected pipe bomb.
There are currently no reports of people injured in the blast.
Emergency services are currently carrying out a public safety operation and homes near the incident have been evacuated as a precaution.
Police are urgently appealing for witnesses and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
Police Detectives Newry, Morne and Downe Campbell said: “Shortly before 10:50 p.m. It was reported that neighbors heard a loud bang in the area.
“Police arrived at the scene and the remains of a suspected pipe bomb were discovered which is believed to have caused burns to a nearby property.
“At this stage, no injuries have been reported.
“A number of houses have been evacuated as a safety measure, to allow the police to carry out a public safety operation in the area.”
“Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and police would call anyone with information to contact them on 101 quoting the reference number 1997 27/01/22.
