The speculations are now over as Activision has finally lifted the curtain on all the floating rumors. It has been confirmed that 2022’s upcoming Call of Duty is actually a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare.

According to the official announcement on Monday, Activision has officially shared the much needed information about one of the most anticipated games of the year. The Infinity Ward team is in charge of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, just in case you haven’t been following.

The previous entry arrived almost three years ago and was a big hit, thanks to record sales worldwide. Moreover, the majority of gamers have widely praised its gameplay design and overall quality.
Earlier this year, Call of Duty confirmed that a new game would be coming in 2022. But it was unclear whether it would be a sequel or a full remaster of an earlier installment.

However, there is no longer any doubt about it, as Activision has just made it very clear. trusted point of sale, CharlieIntelreported this massive news on his Twitter account, with the following tweet:
“This year’s Call of Duty is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare®, the most successful Call of Duty title to date, and will be the most advanced experience in franchise history,” Activision said in its financial results for the first quarter of 2022.

As you can clearly read, Modern Warfare 2 will be the sequel to 2019’s game, which also happens to be the best-selling COD to date. In addition, the upcoming offer will be even better and “the most advanced experience in franchise history”.
The overall situation now looks quite interesting since Activision is also busy preparing its merger with Xbox. After the deal with Microsoft closes, all of the publisher’s rebranded IPs, including CoD, will report to Xbox Game Studios boss Phil Spencer. And it seems almost inevitable that there will be a lot of focus on making this franchise even more iconic in the near future than it is now.
